Katherine Gilmer and Sarah Giglio, of Gilmer & Giglio, LLC, have made some big changes in the last 6 months. On January 1, 2017, they left their previous law firm where Katherine had been an associate attorney for three and a half years and Sarah had been an associate attorney for a year and a half to open their own law firm and practice law their way.
“My favorite part of my job is helping my clients navigate their way through a legal system that can be confusing at its best and downright mercurial and maddening at its worst,” Gilmer said.
In the process of opening
their own office, Gilmer and Giglio have found themselves surprised and
gratified by the number of people who have offered assistance and advice
in their new venture. “It has been really exciting for us to hear from
people in our community who are thrilled to see not only two women
running a law firm and handling these types of cases, but who are
thrilled to see us, specifically, doing so. We have felt overwhelmed at
the positive reaction from the legal and business community towards our
new venture,” Gilmer said.
Both
Gilmer & Giglio enjoy practicing in an area of law that allows them
to be in a courtroom regularly. They both chose this career path
because they wanted to help people. “We really care about the people we
serve,” Giglio said. “Our clients mean a lot to us, and we do our best
to not only help them through the legal system but also to help them get
their life back in order outside the courtroom.”
Gilmer worked as a prosecutor for four years before moving into private practice.
“While
working at the city, I could see that the criminal justice system is
not designed to assist people with the underlying reasons for criminal
behavior, and I wanted to stop seeing the same people prosecuted for the
same offenses over and over,” Gilmer said. “I wanted to save the world.
I’m not sure I’m doing that, but I’m hopeful that I am doing something,
even if it is on a one-person-at-a-time scale.”

is married and is a member of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier.
She is also a member of the ArkLaTex Ambassadors, the Shreveport Bar

before moving to Shreveport. Gilmer & Giglio are both members of
Business Networking International, both serving on the membership
committees of their respective chapters. Gilmer is a member of the
Shreveport Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, and the
Louisiana Association
of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She was appointed at the end of 2016 to
serve as a board member for the Louisiana Public Defender Board where
she serves on the Policy Committee.
