Falling leaves and cooler temperatures are soon to be in our forecast. Our moods lift as the heat and humidity dissipate, and we seem to recharge, gaining energy and enthusiasm with the refreshing change of season. We want this issue to reflect no less than that same kind of vitality.

Different people enjoy different things. But as a self-proclaimed bookworm, I distinctly fall into one of these two categories.

When I see mushrooms popping up in my neighborhood or around town, my mind races back to an unforgettable afternoon I remember as if it was yesterday. That particular afternoon, my 4-year-old daughter was introduced to a mushroom growing on the borderline of our yard and our next door neighbor’s.

1: Unclogging a sink. Chemicals found at the store are helpful at removing clogs, but sometimes they won’t resolve the issue. I’ve had success removing a clog by sticking a wire hanger down the drain to break up the clog. You can also use a plunger or rent a hand-snake.

ATHENA EXCEPTIONAL AND INSPIRING WOMEN FOR 2016
Every woman has something ingrained in her that makes her special, and to recognize that fact, at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 12 at Sam’s Town Casino, 16 women will be honored as Athena award nominees during a luncheon sponsored by the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce.

She is an advocate for children and invests time and money in their lives. Casey-Jones was born in Shreveport and educated in Caddo Parish public schools. She graduated with honors from Southern University in 2000 with a B.A. degree in mass communications and began a career as a contractor for the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Dallas.

For all of the wonderful meals we enjoy, it’s often hard to make it to dessert. In spite of our best intentions and anticipation, we find ourselves too full when it gets time to order that last course. Today I will share some of my favorite restaurant delights and baked goods that will make you want to order dessert first.

In October, Germany goes wild with festivals all over the country, one bigger than Munich’s Octoberfest. Most of us who have heard of Octoberfest think of huge beer-drinking tents with live polka bands and giant steins hoisted by ladies in braided pigtails wearing Lederhosen.

In a shallow dish, mix together the bread crumbs and flour. Season with salt and pepper. Place the egg in a separate dish. Heat oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Dip pork steaks in egg, then coat with the bread crumb mixture. Fry in the hot oil until browned on both sides and cooked through, about 5 minutes per side.

When considering the first of our layouts to feature floral arrangements, we knew there was an abundance of riches. Two women arrive for a job interview. One is in her best business suit with perfect pumps and armed with a matching bag. The other wears crumpled khakis and a too-large pullover. Despite what each woman says to the employer, the well-dressed person will more than likely land the job.

“The film business was down, but it’s picked up a little bit again,” Acree said. “We have two projects in prep right now. They’re small-budget projects, but they do spend money and bring folks in. Who knows? One day they could be bigger budget projects.”.

Gemini XXVIII
The Krewe of Gemini hosted their Royalty Coronation at Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino on Aug. 20. Guests were able to peruse an extensive collection of silent auction items before the royal court was announced. Captain XXVIII is Mary Louise Stansell, King XXVIII is Jack Murphy and Queen XXVII is Karen Murphy.

Reconciliation Dinner
The Petroleum Club in Downtown Shreveport, Slow Food North Louisiana, in collaboration with other partners and sponsors, hosted a Reconciliation Dinner on Aug. 27. This dinner was based on a famous historical event that happened in Charleston, S.C., at the close of the Civil War.

40 Under 40
The Young Professionals Initiative (YPI) hosted their monthly networking social at Aura Ultra Lounge in downtown Shreveport on Aug. 23. Folks from the Louisiana Film Prize were on site offering buy-one, get-one-free tickets to the Louisiana Film Prize festival, which is the weekend Sept.

Woman’s Department Club
The Woman’s Department Club held “An Extraordinary Fashion and Style Show Luncheon” on Sept. 15 at their historic headquarters at 802 Margaret Place. Fall and winter clothing from Dillard’s Department Stores were featured on the runway. The elegant setting was decorated for fall by Wendy Harper of Wendy’s Decorating Details.
