Nancy Norris is a financial planner for Northwestern Mutual where she helps people grow and protect their incomes. With her background in the Air Force, she is well traveled and has an edgy style that stands out in a crowd.
Q: Describe your personal style: norris: My personal style is always based off of comfort, and I like to throw something edgy in there to keep it exciting. I’ve always had an edgier side to my style but now as a mom and a professional, I’ve found a balanced approach to being edgy yet professional.
Q: Are you originally from Shreveport? If not, tell me about your journey. norris: I am originally from California where I joined the Air Force, and that’s how I found my way here. I met my husband while stationed in Italy and we ended up here to be closer to my beautiful step-daughter, so now this is home.
Q: What have you learned in your travels? norris: I have learned so many things from my travels, but the main things that have stayed with me are to keep an open mind, when you’re surrounded by a different culture embrace it because you never know what you may be missing out on. I’ve also learned some tips from the Italians, dress your best no matter where you are going, you never know who you’ll see or who will see you.
Q: Where do you gather your inspiration for your style? norris: I don’t necessarily have an inspiration for my style because my outfit of the day usually depends on my mood and whatever stands out to me when I look in my closet. In the summer, I love bright colors, the brighter the better and in the winter I love darker prints.
Q: What does individuality and personal style mean to you? norris: It’s always been important to me to be myself regardless of what trend is in. I teach my kids to express themselves and do what feels right to them. I’ve always had a unique sense of style and I don’t tend to keep up with what’s ‘in’ and I’m OK with that.
Q: What confirms a must-have purchase for you: the style, cut or bargain? norris: I am all about a bargain. I love to look sharp but I am very strict about my budget, seeing as I am a financial planner and all, budget is very important to me.
Q: What are some of your classic office pieces?
Norris: I love a bold statement necklace with a blazer. Those are my two go-to pieces, and I pair them with an edgy pair of heels.
Q: What do you get complimented on the most? norris: My hair, I cut over 17 inches off of my hair over two years ago and donated it to locks of love. It was the best decision I’ve made especially living in the south. I appreciate the compliments, they definitely make my day every time.
Q: Do you feel your dynamic style is perceived as unapproachable in your professional career or does your powerful appearance strengthen your role in your career? norris: I truly hope that I am approachable. I have always been a strong woman and love empowering other women in the work force. Maintaining a professional appearance has always been important to me all while staying true to my personal style. I always want to give the impression that I am not afraid to take a risk but also that I am a professional and I take my practice very seriously because helping people gain financial security is a passion of mine.
