Editor’s Note
The next time you are typing an email – turn on some music and dance. I can multitask – believe me, I can – but I have trouble when dancing is thrown in the mix. We live in a community filled with multitaskers and the gender who leads in this skill is mostly women.

The epiphany
I always look forward to the first of the year and the promise it brings. January boasts of a fresh start – a season of renewal. A clean slate and a new perspective that comes with the rolling over of that first calendar page. It’s as if we collectively look in the mirror and decide to be the best version of ourselves in the new year.

The Good, Green and Girly
Hello, 2015! What is it about the new year that makes us feel like we get a clean slate for everything? I don’t know about you, but for me I was just as tipsy and exactly the same weight I was before I gave my husband a New Year’s smooch as I was after, but still, I love the idea of starting off fresh.

What the World needs now

However, I also don’t have a tremendous amount of patience when it comes to my DIY projects. On the other hand, my father, a very talented wood craftsman on the side, can build beautiful pieces of furniture. He made my siblings and me rocking chairs when we were younger, and he recently made an easel for my son last Christmas.

DINING
les bons temps rouler! What does that mean? It means “Let the good times roll” because Mardi Gras is here. That’s Fat Tuesday in English. And what exactly is it? It’s the carnival season between Christmas and Lent.

Big Easy Eats of Mardi Gras
Add the ham, chicken and sausage to the pot, and pour in the tomatoes, beef broth and chicken broth. Season with thyme and Cajun seasoning. Bring to a boil, and add the rice. Bring to a boil, then turn the heat to low, cover and simmer for about 20 minutes, until the rice is tender.

AGENDA
Parade is a chance for festive pets to celebrate Mardi Gras. Activities begin at 1 p.m. The parade walks at 3 p.m. Register the day of the parade, $20 for the first pet and $10 for each additional pet. T-shirts will be available for $15 each and $10 for participants.

FEBRUARY [ AGENDA ]
FUN FOR THE FAMILY FEB. 7: KREWE OF CENTAUR PARADE, Parade begins at Clyde Fant Parkway at Lake Street. It continues on Clyde Fant Parkway to Shreveport- Barksdale Highway. The parade then takes a left on to East Kings Highway and continues to Preston Avenue, where it ends.

Mardi Gras Style Show
Whitney Newson emceed the show as some designers also walked the runway. A variety of king cakes and drinks were served at the show. Agora Borealis owner Katy Larsen closed the show in a show-stopping, one-of-a-kind ombre blue-and-green wedding dress..

40 under 40
More than 500 people attended the Young Professionals Initiative’s 40 Under 40 Gala presented by The Forum on Dec. 5 at the Horseshoe Riverdome. Forty nominees were honored during the event. Dr. Melva Williams was named Young Professional of the Year by YPI, in connection with the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce.

Christmas in the sky
Harrah’s Louisiana Downs was packed Dec. 13 with a supporting crowd for Christmas in the Sky. Shreveport Regional Arts Council held the event SKY ROCKS, its 16th biennial fundraiser. The electric and eclectic musical journey was produced by the city of Shreveport, Hilton-Shreveport and Harrah’s Louisiana Downs and benefits SRAC.

Les Boutiques de Noel
Les Boutiques de Noel, the signature holiday shopping event that starts the holiday season for the Shreveport-Bossier City area, was held Nov. 20-22 at the Bossier Civic Center.

Landscape and Love
I am a voracious reader, and because I read across many genres, it takes a lot to get my attention. When I stumbled upon ‘Charleston’ while browsing in a little bookstore in downtown Charleston, of all things, the cover caught my eye. The cover art was elegant and understated with the interesting title of simply the name of the city.
