‘Make it amazing’

Whether your child is moving up from nursery school to kindergarten, or changing schools for any number of reasons, there are steps you can take now to ease the transition for your child.

Parents can help their child transition to a new school by being prepared, organized and by encouraging a can-do attitude.

Be prepared.

Registration happens early, and it is important to plan ahead. If you know that you are moving into the area, make a phone call to the school counselor or school office.

Having all of this information available in a folder during the registration process will alleviate any stress of trying to scramble at the last minute to complete your registration packet.

Providing proof of residency can be as simple as a current utility bill.

Be prepared that your child may struggle with the change. Children react differently to different situations, but you know your child best. Practice ahead of time. This can help your child become familiar with a new situation or obstacle that may arise. You can practice your new morning routine or route to school before the first day of school to familiarize your child with the new schedule and route. Try to visit the new school campus and meet administrators or personnel.

Be organized.

Make a house calendar to help everyone in your house to stay on schedule with important events or deadlines.

Organization can help thwart disasters or missed opportunities.

Get involved in the Parent Teacher Student Association at your child’s new school and volunteer to help out at events or daily activities if possible.

Encourage a can-do attitude.

No matter the obstacle or challenge your child faces at a new school, make sure they feel supported and know that you are available to help or offer a listening ear.

Whatever the reasoning behind the change of schools, focus on the positive. Change can be a good thing.
