Decorator shares stunning before-and-after images

As many are learning nowadays, dealing with aging parents can be challenging. For Kathy M. Smith, moving back to her family home to care for her mother was an easy decision.

“What was not easy was cramming my adult life into my childhood bedroom,” Smith said. “I tried editing, donating and garage sales, but, still had entirely too much. ‘Overflow’ would be an understatement. Not to mention, nothing had changed in almost 40 years and everything had to go.”

Smith turned to Myron Griffing, of Space: interiors.

“He had just finished furnishing my friend’s entire house, and I really liked his clean-lined furniture choices,” Smith said. “I charged him with the dreaded task of transforming my 1960s blue bedroom into a current, modern and restful retreat.”

Smith and Griffing discussed color and style. “I love purple but, did not want a ‘clown’ room or homage to LSU,” Smith said. “Myron showed me more elevated and sophisticated versions like: plum, lilac and aubergine. They were beautiful, peaceful and had a hint of royal-ness to them. We also looked at varying shades of grey, silvers and chrome as accent color. The style of the room we chose was ‘Hollywood Regency.’ It would be glamorous, elegant and serene with a art deco feel, but it had to be functional.

“His ability to pull together items that make a room look collected and not just bought is awesome. We would then go look at the pieces I liked and Myron would negotiate a better price with the store,” Smith said.

Smith said she has more space with this new design.

“I have tons of much needed storage thanks to [a closets by Melanie] system, sliding mirrored doors and possibly the coolest bed I’ve ever seen,” Smith said.

Griffing said he enjoyed working with Smith to solve her space issues.

“Working with Kathy was a great experience for us both,” Griffing said. “If she did not like something, she would definitely let me know. I’m a direct person, so, I absolutely appreciate that. We both love the room!”
