THE SHAPE OF THINGS
Shapes and math: Both are concepts we begin learning at a young age, and one can be more easily understood than the other. However, when the two are taught concurrently, such as within the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, young minds can better understand both applications.

BAKING FOR BIRTHDAYS & BINGES
The other thing that comes with birthdays is birthday parties. My husband and I decided that until she is old enough to really understand it’s her birthday, Gracie’s celebrations will be pretty low-key. We had family and a few friends over for pizza, pool time and presents – and, of course, a little help from Pinterest.

THE BEST ACADEMY
As far back as I can remember, my mother has taught me about life and the right way to live it. She is 91 years old now, and the learning continues. Really, the things my mother has taught me are not complicated but simple and true. These things give life meaning and purpose.

EASY UPGRADES
Upon moving into our new space, my head started buzzing with so many ideas. I wanted to redo the kitchen, and the garden outside needed work, a few light fixtures could use an upgrade, and the tile in the bathroom could be redone. There was just so much we “had” to do.

On Tuesday I’ll post the new menu for the next Monday’s service day. I also work on our e-blast, which includes the basic menu as well as a topic for the week. Past topics have included vegan sources for omega 3’s; seasonal allergies, Passover, etc. I also do my best to settle the books on Tuesday.

for Ouachita Parish. According to National Geographic, the Ouachita River is one of the most beautiful rivers in the entire world. Monroe is known as “Sportsman’s Paradise,” and is the location of the popular A&E “Duck Dynasty” reality show. This town is a great place to visit during the summer.

Tips to Get Your Child Ready for Summer Camp
2. Remember the essentials: shirts, shorts, shoes, socks and undies. 3. If your child will be swimming, don’t forget to pack a swimsuit or two. If the camp does not provide their own sunscreen or aloe, it might be a good idea to send some in your child’s bag.

PINK PARTY
The Pink Party was finally legal and was held May 3 at the Shreveport Convention Center. Hundreds showed up for a night of fun and provided a $10 door donation to Easter Seals. This year’s event paid tribute to all the activities expected of a 21st birthday celebration, starting with its theme, “Happy 21st Birthday – Finally Legal.

BACKLOT GALA
On the warm spring evening of May 10, supporters of the Robinson Film Center toasted the world’s best film festivals at its second gala Backlot fundraiser. The 600 and 700 blocks of Texas Street were transformed into a series of film-themed party stops.

'EVENING FOR HEROES'
A light was on 83 people recognized for providing lifesaving care at “Evening for Heroes” on May 8 at the Shreveport Convention Center. The funds raised help support the LSU Health Sciences Foundation.

OPERA GALA
Ghali and Mrs. Hope Ghali. Supporters of the arts were welcomed by Shreveport Opera Express singers from an indoor balcony as they entered the front door. Once inside, they feasted on the Petroleum Club’s inventive international food with creative ties to the grand operas.
