Generations honor ancestors

Twenty-two youth were presented at the Plantation Ball on April 4 at the Scottish Rite Temple. Those presented come from generations of planters. One presentee’s great-great-grandmother was the first woman allowed to vote in Claiborne Parish. Another presentee’s great-great-great-grandfather built Caspiana House, which has since been donated to LSU Shreveport for use in its Pioneer Heritage program. The property from one young man’s family is being used by 20th Century Fox’s Salem TV series. Another’s great-great-great-great-great-grandfather traded seven cows to the Spanish government in 1800 for 7,000 acres of rich Red River land. Many were third generation presentees in the 56th annual event. The presentation of sons and daughters is annually anticipated as an established custom of Holiday in Dixie. The event ends with the Virginia Reel and an old-fashioned plantation breakfast.
