Mardi Gras Parade celebrates pets for 15 years

RiverView Park will be a day for dogs, cats and other pets to parade around for the 15th annual celebration of the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux.
This krewe undoubtably enjoys the fun and support of all pet lovers alike each year and this year will prove no different with the theme titled, “A Wonderland TeaPAWty.” The parade will begin at 1 p.m. Feb. 23 at RiverView Park.
The Krewe of Barkus and Meoux is also known as “The Animal Krewe.” According to their website, the mission of the krewe is to develop, foster and promote programs to benefit abused, neglected and homeless animals, as well as promote responsible pet ownership with public education about a voluntary spay/neuter program.
Hundreds and thousands of people attend the event not only for the parade but for the pets dressed in Mardi Gras regalia or costumes.
At the parade, prizes are awarded for the best dressed, best float and pet/owner look-a-like. Judging of registered pets for prizes begins at 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The judged contests include Best Float, Pet/Owner look-a-like and Best Dressed.
The royal court of pets will be presented at 2:30 p.m. at the parade.
