A bride-to-be (center) and her friends celebrate at the Last Call at Nine event in May.

Whenever local fitness instructor NancyBeth Griffiths teaches her fitness dance classes, she notices how fired up her participants are for each of those sessions.

“Particularly in the dance class, people just light up. They absolutely light up, and the music [in] the class is fantastic. I buy my routines from professional dancers and fitness instructors and choreographers, so we get exposure to so many different styles of dance and movements, and the dancers — they just glow,” she said.

This caused her to think about how she could create the same energy and joy outside of the fitness room, especially for the mature crowd.

“A lot of us are different ages.

I’ve got everything from 20-somethings to even some 60-somethings. … I noticed [for] us older folks, there’s not an opportunity for us to go out and celebrate with movement. … Dance and music is something that we used to do when we were younger, and there just weren’t opportunities to do it,” she said.

One of the main barriers for the mature crowd is the later times that the nightclubs start their events, as they do not want their next morning to be impaired. This led her to go to one of the local nightclubs and asked if she could rent their space from 5 to 9 p.m.

“I said, ‘Look, you [have] got a dead window here because your people don’t come in till 10. Can I rent the space from you from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.…then we’ll be out before your younger crowd comes in?’ They were great. [They were] on board with it, and that began the Last Call at Nine,” she said. Fast forward to today, she is hosting the second annual Last Call at Nine nighttime experience on Sept. 19. The party will be held at Crown Night Club at 275 Tremont St. from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. This event will include current and throwback music, a dance floor, cocktails, mocktails and an opportunity to have conversation.

Griffiths also talked about what attendees can expect for this nighttime experience, including new additions.

“We are constantly tweaking and collecting feedback. So one of the changes we’ve moved to a club where there are different rooms… where we could pump the music in there or not. We noticed a lot of people wanted to have conversation, which you can’t in the traditional kind of nightclub vibe,” she said.

Appetizers are provided as the event occurs during the dinner hour and cocktails and mocktails are also available.

She also spoke about why it is important to have events like this in the community for the mature people.

“As we get older, my generation [doesn’t have] many opportunities for us,” she said. “We lost groups, we lost connections and we have to rebuild them. As I say with my dancing folks, we’re finding our tribe.”
