Tournament games will include Tug-of-War, Foam Dodgeball, Boston Jeopardy and more.

The BlackBrownBoston social impact organization will host its first free high-energy community field day at Malibu Beach in Dorchester on July 19 from 1 to 7 p.m.

Open to all ages, “The Hoodlympics: Beach Edition” will feature neighborhood teams from across the city facing off in competition games for prizes such as trophies, bragging rights and the title of Boston Hoodlympics champions.

This community field day is offered in partnership with Save the Harbor/Save the Bay and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), which runs the Better Beaches Grant Program. The two organizations give “small grants to local organizations and artists to activate the region’s public beaches through free events and programs on DCR beaches in Nahant, Lynn, Revere, Winthrop, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester, Quincy and Hull.”

The tournament games will include Tug-of-War, Foam Dodgeball, Boston Jeopardy, Steal the Bacon, Head/Shoulders/Knees/Cups and Relay Tic-Tac-Toe. The celebration will be emceed by Miss HotSauce from Spark FM and feature live music from DJ Motivate Merren.

Community members are encouraged to bring their beach chairs, picnic blankets, towels and snacks.

BlackBrownBoston founder Vania Arroyo talked about how this event came to be.

“Boston is a very diverse city, and each neighborhood has their own unique pride. … I just thought it would be a good idea to get the whole city together to have fun neighborhood competitive games to see who really is the number one neighborhood in the city,” she said.

She also said that this community field day event is a positive outlet for adults to tap into their inner child.

“There’s just a lot going on in the world. …There’s a lot of things for kids in the city: a lot of fun activities, carnivals [and] events that adults don’t get to participate in. So, [I thought that] it would be a cool idea to have a field day for adults only,” she said.

She added that while the games are for ages 16 and up, the participants signed up so far are between the ages of 21 and 50 plus.

“It’s definitely going to be a day of joy, excitement, friendly competition for everybody and everybody gets to cheer on for their neighborhood.”

Nine neighborhoods will compete: South Boston, Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Mission Hill, Roslindale and the South End. Along with other non-tournament games like spades, dominoes, art tables, corn hole and more, there also will be a special game in honor of the World Cup Finals called bubble soccer.

Arroyo said it is important to host fun events like this for community members.

“Black and brown people deserve to be in these spaces along the water,” said Arroyo. “I want people to forget everything that’s going on right now in the city, forget all the different neighborhood dramas, come out and feel a sense of pride for their neighborhood.”
