The election of Dr. Sarah Willie-LeBreton as chair of the Board for the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts (AICUM) marks a significant milestone for higher education in the commonwealth. As the 12th president of Smith College since 2023, Willie-LeBreton brings a rare blend of executive leadership, deep sociological expertise and an unwavering commitment to equity and the liberal arts to this crucial regional role. At a time when higher education faces complex institutional and social shifts, her appointment signals a collaborative future rooted in community, self-awareness and intentional transformation.

Willie-LeBreton’s distinguished academic journey serves as the foundation for her leadership. After earning her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Haverford College, she completed her master’s and doctoral degrees at Northwestern University. Her subsequent career spans decades of dedicated service inside the academy, including teaching tenures at Colby and Bard colleges.

Prior to assuming the presidency at Smith, she spent 26 years at Swarthmore College, culminating in her impactful role as provost and dean of the faculty.

As an applied sociologist focusing on race, ethnicity and social inequality, Willie-LeBreton has consistently bridged the gap between academic theory and real-world institutional change. Her scholarship, including her seminal book “Acting Black” (2003) and the edited volume Transforming the Academy (2016), directly examines the experiences of marginalized identities within dominant academic environments. Throughout her career, she has leveraged this research to guide a broad range of organizations toward greater inclusivity, compassion, and strategic self-awareness.

Her influence extends well beyond individual campuses into state and national policy frameworks. In recent years, Willie-LeBreton has emerged as a vital voice on the economic and social value of higher education. Governor Maura Healey appointed her to the state’s DRIVE (Discovery, Research, and Innovation for a Vibrant Economy) initiative, aiming to protect jobs and boost life-saving research across Massachusetts universities and tech firms. Furthermore, her global perspective is reflected in her appointment by the New England Commission on Higher Education to chair the accreditation committee for the African Leadership University in Rwanda.

By stepping into the role of AICUM chair, Willie-LeBreton expands her extensive portfolio of board governance, which includes past and present service for the Five College Consortium, the national Women’s College Coalition and Haverford College. Her leadership comes at a vital moment, positioning her to advocate effectively for independent higher education while steering member institutions toward a more equitable and innovative future.
