The weather is just barely clearing 50 degrees and already Bostonians are thinking about the return of outdoor dining. Many restaurants will start opening their patios in April and picnic season follows quickly. The Rose Kennedy Greenway recently announced a slate of food trucks that will make the rounds throughout the park this month through the fall.
The food truck program, presented this year by M&T Bank, officially kicks off April 1 with a total of 22 trucks popping up along the Greenway on a rotating schedule throughout the week. Trucks can be found at Dewey Square, Rowes Wharf Plaza, State Street, the North End, Milk Street and the Greenway Carousel. Dewey Square and Rowes Wharf Plaza will lead the charge on April 1 with the remainder of the locations launching May 1.
Hungry parkgoers will spot longtime favorites like Chicken & Rice Guys and Mozilla, the dumpling and Asian comfort food truck. There are several new food trucks as well, including Crepe Shop, Daddy’s Fried Dough, Elite Dough Cookies, Kebabish, Lordya Gourmet, Noonan Concessions, Rockin’ Burgers and Si Cara Pizzabar. The goal is to satisfy any craving from wood-fired pizzas and jerk chicken to dumplings and crepes.
Lordya Saint-Jean launched her Haitian food truck Lordya Gourmet in June 2023. This is her first year working with The Greenway where she’ll serve up fried snapper, creole barbecue, plantains and more. One of Lordya Gourmet’s all-time bestsellers is a plate with griyo, a braised and fried pork shoulder, served with rice and kidney beans, chicken gravy, mac salad and the popular condiment pikliz.
“After I emigrated to the USA, I couldn’t find the flavor that I was looking for,” Saint-Jean said. “Most importantly, I couldn’t find an upscale restaurant that would serve Haitian dishes beautifully and professionally, so I said to myself, ‘Our food deserves more than a to-go container’ and that’s when I decided to open a restaurant.”
With real estate, licensing and supplies at an all-time high, Saint-Jean decided to start with a food truck, which has lower overhead. Ultimately, she’d like to open a brick-and-mortar eatery.
“It’s a bridge to a bigger dream,” she said of the vibrant yellow, orange and green truck.
Serving on The Greenway is another step toward that dream. Keep an eye on the online food truck schedule to see where Lordya Gourmet and other food vendors will be throughout the week.
“It’s a dream to share my culture around the world through a plate of food. [The] Greenway is a place where diversity meets,” said Saint-Jean. “I hope we create more connections for growth while we do what we do best: serving tasty, authentic Haitian food.”
