Alex Egbuonu in action against St. George’s School. In his senior year he average 25.1 points, and 10.3 rebounds per game.

The Spartans star’s next adventure will take him to Milwaukee, Wisc. where he will be a student athlete at Marquette University.

The Lawrence Academy A-student was recruited by many schools including Boston College, Villanova and Stanford

Alex Egbuonu is a 6-foot, 6-inch, 220-pound forward who played the starring role on this year’s Lawrence Academy men’s basketball team. What distinguishes the son of Trina and Nonso and his younger brother Andrew from every other high school basketball player across the state is that he was recently named the 2025-26 Gatorade Massachusetts Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

The Gatorade Player of the Year award recognizes the top high school athletes in the United States, honoring excellence in athletic performance, academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated within the community.

Each year the award highlights athletes who excel not only in their sport but also academically and through their community service commitments. Alex, the 41st recipient in Massachusetts, exemplifies these qualities.

The elite legacy spans professional athletes and coaches to CEOs. The names of Jayson Tatum (2015-16, Chaminade College Preparatory School, Missouri), Cooper Flagg (2023-24, Montverde Academy, Florida), Caroline Ducharme, Noble and Greenough School (2019-20 and 2020-21), and Cameron Boozer (2022-23 and 2024-25, Christopher Columbus High School in Florida) are among the previous names.

Gatorade annually recognizes one winner from each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C., in 12 sports: football, boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, softball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, girls’ volleyball and boys’ and girls’ track and field. Gatorade honors 610 high school athletes with the award each year. Drawn from a pool of state winners, one national winner is selected in each of the 12 sports.

The Gatorade Player of the Year recipient also receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner. To date, Gatorade Player of the Year programs have provided more than $6.4 million in grants to winners across more than 2,200 organizations

As for his work on the court, the senior forward averaged 25.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.8 steals while shooting 49.9% from the field. He hit 36.2% from beyond the three-point arc, and 75.1% from the free throw line for the Spartans team that finished the year with a 22-8 record. He is ranked as the nation’s No. 71 prospect in the class of 2026 by ESPN.

Lawrence’s head basketball coach Mike Foustoukos (pronounced Fa-See-Kos): “I’ve coached here at Lawrence Academy for three years. I could coach here for the rest of my life and not find a better young man than Alex. I am the lucky one who got to coach him in his developing years at Lawrence Academy. He is as well-rounded as they come; an allstar in every way.”

The senior Spartan’s list of community accomplishments is numerous, from helping to feed families facing food shortages during the holiday season to working with children with disabilities, providing them with opportunities to participate in sports. He accomplishes all this while maintaining an ‘A’ average in the classroom. Most basketball evaluators cite his toughness, basketball I.Q., along with his ability and willingness to fill any front court positional need his team requires to create an advantage are his top assets, according to Matt McKay, CEO and founder of Pro Insight.

Looking ahead, the senior plans to play his college basketball at Marquette University this fall.

Alex Egbuonu: “I credit my parents for my success. They started me off playing multiple sports at a young age, including swimming. My basketball skills started developing when I was in eighth grade. By ninth grade, my dribbling and ball handling had reached a level where I knew that I could play basketball at a very high level. This year, all the pieces of my game came together, so here I am.

“I am extremely proud to be named the Gatorade Massachusetts Boys Player of the Year.

Just as proud as being a 4.0 (‘A’) student in my senior year. My mother and father have always stressed the importance of academics to me. Playing sports is fun, but it does not completely identify who you are I am as a person. I’m still trying to figure that out. What I want people to know about me is that I am an intelligent person who plays basketball at an elevated level, not just a basketball player. I came to Lawrence Academy for the challenge of being a ‘student athlete’ who takes pride in his work in the classroom and on the basketball court.”

Congratulations to Alex Egbuonu from Lawrence Academy, the 2025-26 Gatorade Massachusetts Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
