Boston International City League Soccer champions

The Boston International Varsity Lions team is back. They are City League champs this year, beating the Holland Dearborn STEM Academy by a score of 2-0 to win the City League Championship at Madison Park.

Last year, the team, coached by 2023 Coach of the Year Edmar Varela, lost a squeaker to Boston Latin School 3-2, ending their hopes of being Kings of the City. Against Dearborn, the team was led by forward Jerry Registe, who scored the only two goals needed for the win. He scored just before halftime and once in the second half.

The Lion’s defense, led by sophomore co-captain Steevenson Chanson kept Dearborn at bay.

The MVP Award for the tournament was presented to Registe.

The team followed this championship with a 3-0 non-conference win over Division 1 Everett High School. This time, Registe was joined in the scoring by Chanson and Isaac Claveu. The team is resilient, losing many players to graduation, but the coach is molding about eight to nine new players into a championship-caliber squad.

The coach explained, “We lost many players last year. But this year, we’re looking at eight to nine new players. That’s the struggle that we face every year.”

With a record of 12-2-3, the team is set to play Chelsea High School this week as they await the state tournament seeding. The Lions are currently ranked No. 1 in the MIAA Division 5 standings, a testament to their hard work and dedication.

This achievement should pridefully fill all Boston International Varsity Lions fans’ hearts.
