TIP OF THE WEEK

Manage food allergies

Dairy and nut allergies are common enough among people to warrant warning labels on food, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration might have to add sesame to the list of food allergies to come with a warning. According to a recent study from Northwestern University, as many as 1.5 million Americans could be allergic to sesame. Medical NewsToday.com offers some tips to avoid a food allergy:

• Stay away from food products with confusing food labels, such as “manufactured on shared equipment” or “may contain.”

• Remove foods you’re allergic to from the refrigerator, freezer and pantry. Clean all cooking apparatuses, organize separate food preparation areas and cook allergy-safe foods first.

• Allergic reaction to food can include itching skin and eyes, runny nose, sneezing, chest tightness, wheezing, swelling of the tongue, nausea and a rapid or slow heartbeat.

START YOUR DAY OFF RIGHT

Healthy breakfast habits

Breakfast has long been touted as the most important meal of the day, but according to a recent study, 13% of Americans admitted they rarely eat breakfast. The study, conducted by OnePoll in conjunction with Sabra, also found the average American only eats breakfast three times per week.

Here are a few tips for a better breakfast routine, according to TheKitchn.com:

• While grocery shopping, keep breakfast in mind and stock up on your favorite staple items you’ll need for the week.

• Keep breakfast foods easy and convenient. Cut up fruit, prep smoothie ingredients or leave bowls, spoons and boxes of cereal on the table the night before.

• Make a pot of hard-boiled eggs for the week for the mornings you’re running late, or use them on toast.

• Get enough individual-size containers to pre-make your portions for the week.
