Republican aspirations to knock off incumbent Democrats in the council of state in Raleigh resulted in a bumper crop of competitive primaries in May. No surprise then that the crowded Republican primaries resulted in a number of runoffs to determine who will face the Democratic incumbents in November.

Your state government at work Larco Construction, a division of Branscom, has received a $4 million contract from the state of North Carolina to resurface 26 miles of roads in Forsyth County, the NC Department of Transportation announced. The company is based in Winston-Salem. Roadways that will see improvements include Reidsville Road, Union Cross Road, Seward Road, Fishel Road and Darwick Road. The work is scheduled to begin on July 30 and continue through early November.

A man with neck tattoos and “possibly face” tattoos robbed staff at Freshen Up Barbers on High Point Road in Greensboro just after 10 p.m. on July 5. The suspect initially engaged staff in a conversation and asked for change, and when they started to comply the suspect pulled out a gun to demand money, police reported.

Coworkers stick together to get paid
Workers at Sessions had been discussing problems at work before the phone call, primarily the fact that, by their account, numerous employees were owed significant back wages. Both said they were owed money, most of it on previous paychecks, and they said they feared they would be fired and never paid.

As I made my way around the Greensboro Aquatic Center this past weekend reporting for this week’s cover story on the Greensboro Community Swimming Association City Meet (“Strokes”; page 27), I became a repository for critiques of the event and the venue from many of the thousands of parents and well-wishers in attendance.
