DJ handle: The Captain
What it means:
It was a nickname given to me by my sister. She wanted to give my dad, my mom and me nicknames. “Captain” is short for “Captain Take-Me-Shopping” which came from an episode of “Boy Meets World.” She originally wanted to give that nickname to my dad, but it didn’t suit him, so she game it to me, and to this day, she calls me “Captain” or “Cap” for even shorter.
Real name: Anthony Jorrell Hardy On air: My radio show is called “Captain’s World.” I make occasional appearances on WUAG 103.1 FM where every week during the summer I play music from a different genre. I may play rock one week, jazz the next. My mission on WUAG is to see what their library has to offer. You can also catch me each week on 90.9 WQFS where I play mainly rotation music; I also like to mix a whole lot of familiar/unfamiliar tunes on WQFS. I live up to my name because my theme for my show “Captain’s World” is exploring music while being on my very own pirate ship with a crew of zany misfit pirates (all played by yours truly!). Visit the “Captain’s World” group page and fan page for most up-to-date showtimes.
Got in the game: 2008 working at Batanga.com; been putting off joining college radio until my senior year in 2009.
Major Influence: Voice actor Mel Blanc.
Why I do it: My voice acting, my skits and the music I play are what makes me unique. If I didn’t have this uniqueness, the college radio universe would be boring. A lot of Top 40 songs are great every once in a while, but when you listen to the root of music (indie music), you get the flavor of it is irresistible. If it weren’t for artists such as Grizzly Bear, the Foreign Exchange and Mavis Staples, I seriously wouldn’t be in college radio.
Personal playlist: Tons of random songs from random artists including Bombadil, Smash Mouth, Bobby McFerrin, just to name a few.
