Come celebrate 25 Years of Art Kumbalek and 30 Years of The Uptowner!
What a world, ain’a? Hard to believe that Art Kumbalek has now been scribbling his weekly laments, observations and anecdotes in the Shepherd Express for 25 years.
“25 years?” Kumbalek says. “Seems more like 50!” To commemorate a quarter-century’s worth of half-wit and wisdom, Steve and Shawn Johnson, owners of the Uptowner Tavern (1032 E. Center St.), an institution in its own right, will be hosting a celebration to honor Kumbalek’s tireless efforts in laying down the essays for the masses, you bet.
From 2-6 p.m. Sunday, April 1, the Uptowner will honor the Shepherd’s resident sage with drink specials, food and a performance by the Brewhaus Polka Kings.
“He (Kumbalek) used to meet his gang of idiots at the National Liquor Bar (NLB) on 26th and National Avenue. When ‘progress’ trumped history and NLB was torn down to make way for a Walgreens, he found a new home at Uptowner,” explains Steve Johnson. “You’d have to ask him, but I think Uptowner has a similar spirit and diversity of age, race, economics, politics, education, religion, ethnicity, etc. A cultured, cosmopolitan gentleman like Mr. Kumbalek could feel comfortable, ain’a?” Indeed, Kumbalek agrees. “The Uptowner is without a doubt the finest tavern you can find at the corner of Hysteric Center Street and the fabled Humboldt Boulevard,” he says. “And if you’ve ever had the pleasure of having a cocktail there, you know that it’s not only a fan-focking-tastic tavern, but one heck of a charm school to boot—where today is always at least a day before tomorrow, and yesterday may gosh-darn well be today.”
So come on down this Sunday and help us celebrate two Milwaukee institutions!
