Would you rather attend a stuffy fundraising dinner with a group of people you don’t know, or enjoy a delicious meal with family and friends at a great restaurant in your area and still support very important causes? With Share-A-Meal, you not only...
Protecting the protector
One is always saddened to see an old friend left helpless in the hands of fate, even if that friend fills half a city block. As did so many of my generation, I spent dozens of happy hours at the Illinois State Armory at Second and Monroe during my youth.

The inhuman essence of a corporate ‘person’
If they had, they’d be forced to concede that corporate personhood is a sheer fantasy, for there is nothing even remotely human about the bloodless and brainless thing that is Walmart.

birthday poem for Gillian
I always led the van but now with this injured foot I sit atop a breezy hill the season’s first warm day while family and friends’ voices grow faint as they wend their way down the path toward the dense line of leafless trees that betray a hidden...

U.S. Senate candidates give each other gifts of gaffes
It seems to me at times that Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk doesn’t quite seem to grasp what Illinois is really like outside his north suburban 10th Congressional District, which he has represented for several years. Maybe that’s why he almost never informs the media of his campaign events and rarely holds press conferences.

Springfield hosts a calm, conservative Tea Party
Though their counterparts nationwide have made headlines for extreme viewpoints of racism and violence, Springfield Tea Party activists stayed on message Monday at a rally calling for limited government, lower taxes and an end to political corruption.

Truth about health care reform
Health care reform is barely two weeks old, and many Americans have yet to separate fact from fiction, says Dr. Harry R. Moody, director of academic affairs for the American Association of Retired Persons.

A right to ride
During a hearing for the companion bill, Rep. Richard Myers, R-Macomb, said he had some concerns with the bill due to complaints from parks and a state forest in his district. The bill applies to all state-owned public lands, including state forests and parks.

Getting bigger, going green
Dave Olejniczak, chief operating officer at St. John’s, says the project will incorporate several cost-saving, environmentally friendly designs, such as paints, stains and adhesives with low toxin levels, energy-efficient light fixtures and natural lighting whenever possible.

A restaurant to remember
Truly great restaurants have an indefinable, almost ephemeral something that makes them more than the sum of their parts. Delicious food, an attractive setting and courteous service can come together for a good time. But when that certain something is present, a good time is transformed into an extraordinary experience.

The epic labor struggle in the ‘Decatur war zone’
As the 19th century prepared to turn into the 20th, a cataclysmic confrontation between labor and management occurred in the steelmaking town of Homestead, Pa., pitting the wealthy Carnegie Steel Co. against one of the strongest unions of the day.

The new Clash offers little new
Rarely has a remake adhered so closely to its source material as this film does. The script by Travis Beacham and Phil Hay is not so much a reimagining, as it is an act of plagiarism. As in the original, the Greek gods are peeved because a small faction of humans living in the city of Argos have the temerity not to believe in them anymore.

Irresistible resistance
Once upon a time, folksingers and musicians everywhere used voices and music to righteously rail and necessarily knock unfair and overbearing public and private wrongs.

THE ADVICE GODDESS
I agreed to be in a friend’s wedding, and unfortunately, she had to change the date to the day my boyfriend and I were going to Burning Man. When I told him I’d have to go to her wedding instead, he erupted in anger. He wants me to ask her to change the date, and says he’ll “never forgive me” if I don’t go with him.
