Springfield joins global action for climate change
Glaciers that provide drinking water for hundreds of millions of people are disappearing more rapidly than originally predicted. According to the United Nations, 325 million people are already affected by drought, disease, floods, loss of livestock, decline of fish stock and loss of agricultural productivity.

Hoffman in the hunt; Dillard gets a bounce
Hoffman’s survey of 505 likely Democratic primary voters was conducted Oct. 2-4 by Hart Research Associates. The initial head-to-head has state Treasurer Giannoulias leading with 18 percent, followed by Urban League President Cheryle Jackson at 7 percent and 5 percent for former Chicago Inspector General Hoffman.

Capitol coal plant exceeds pollution limits
The state Capitol’s steam plant exceeded limits on some pollutants in 2007 from its coal-burning boilers, and it may still be polluting too much. Located on Klein Street north of the Capitol, the Capitol Complex Power Plant burns coal, oil and natural gas to heat and cool the Capitol complex.

Ashland employee sues village
Dale Naylor, a former employee of Ashland’s public works department, leveled allegations of discrimination against his former employer in federal court in August saying he suffered “great mental anguish, fear, humiliation, degradation, physical and emotional pain and suffering, lost wages and other consequential damages.

DNR reconvenes Conservation Congress
After a five-year hiatus, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will reconvene its Conservation Congress, a two-day conference that brings conservationists and recreation advocates together to discuss future opportunities for the agency and for the state.

In memoriam: Gourmet magazine, 1941-2009
It was in a Kroger grocery store in Champaign, I stopped dead by the periodical rack, my eyes drawn to a beautiful magazine cover: a brass knocker festooned with a festive holly sprig, bright against its dark-painted door. Odd pacing nearly trips up Wild Things
Max (Max Records) is a precocious preteen with a lot on his mind. Dealing with his parents’ divorce, a sister who ignores him and a mother who’s spread too thin (Catherine Keener), he’s left alone a good deal of the time. His vivid imagination helps him fill the void but he feels a great deal of anger and frustration because of his situation.

Lyman Ellerman, a Riverton area native, moved to Nashville, Tenn., several years ago to pursue songwriting as a career. Though the persistent and vibrant songster has yet to score a major cut, the intense workout of songwriting on a daily basis honed his already sharp composing skills and increased his song output immensely.

When police went to a home in Regina, Saskatchewan, looking for David William McKay, 28, a man matching McKay’s description answered the door but said his name was “Matthew,” which, when asked, he misspelled. The Regina Leader-Post reported police also noticed he had the name “David McKay” tattooed on his back.
