Cold Warriors
Readings of 70 to 80 degrees warmed the region while temperatures in the negative teens in the northern Plains and upper Midwest were beginning to prowl southward. Beginning Feb. 10, temperatures got cooler each day, dropping below freezing on Feb. 13, staying there until Feb.

‘I Never Want to Boil Water Again’
When most of the region was shut down because of too much ice and not enough water, Bozz Baucum, the owner of Marilynn’s Place and Ralph’s Place in Shreveport, wasn’t. He was at work boiling water in his commercial crawfish rig to cook meals for teenagers at the Rutherford House.

He called them “enemies of the people” (that sounds familiar) and arrested them. During the peak of these purges, over seven million Soviet citizens were arrested, and millions more died in prison camps (or gulags).

Road to Sainthood
he yellow fever epidemic of 1873 took a heavy toll on the city of Shreveport. Reports estimate Shreveport lost about one-fourth of its population to yellow fever. Now, a move is underway to honor five priests who gave their lives in service to Shreveport during those dark days with sainthood.
