As Isit down to think about what job needs to be done next, Iam able to enjoy a beautiful, warm summer Sunday afternoon in the Deep South. We have just completed cutting some of the season’s best bermuda hay and now must produce this article for ARA magazine.

cowherd was just over 34 million head in 1986 and has contracted to less than 32 million on July 1, 2010. This means fewer cows that need a bull. Cattle producers have become more efficient. Beef production has ranged from 27.06 billion pounds in 2002 to 26.

The primary weapon we use to account for known environmental effects is proper contemporary grouping, which is best achieved through Total Herd Reporting (THR). By definition, a contemporary group is any subset of the herd that is comprised of animals that are given an equal opportunity to perform.

The Multi-Breed EPD model also includes known additive genetic value from other breeds as they are combined with Red Angus. In the past, Red Angus tried to value the additive genetic component of foreign sires through a grouping model.
